Sacred Buddhist Stupas
Stupas of Today
An Ancient Form in a Modern World
The stupa form has been around for thousands of years, and even though its shape has changed over that long period of time, the familiar shape we see in todays stupas has been around since approximately 500 years after the Buddha's passing. The modern stupas of today are sprouting up all over the world, but seem to be even more prevelant in the United States.
Here are some of the more beautiful stupas of our modern times.

Tashi Gomang Stupa
This beautiful stupa is located in Colorado, in a remote part of the state that is much like the Tibet in it's natural beauty and climate. HH Gyalwa Karmapa, supreme head of the Kagyu Order, came to the Baca Grande n southern Colorado and during his visit he had a vision that this would be a place where the rich legacy of Tibetan Buddhism could be successfully transplanted.
Five miles south of Crestone Colorado in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this stupa stands fourtyone feet high. It was consecrated in 1996 by Bokar Rinpoche, and stands today in this remote area in the middle of the 200 acres that will eventually include an institute for the study and pratice of traditional Tibetan medicine, and will also have retreat facilities and a monastery. |
